I had a blast at the Milwaukee Black Theater Festival this weekend! It was the second annual, first in-person theater event and I have to say; if you get an opportunity – check it out.
Pretty Fire is an amazing performance by one Camara Stampley, who takes us through the life and world of Charlayne Woodward. I went through the gamut of emotions as I watched this show filled with such vibrant energy.
The second show that I saw was Black Butterflies. After having heard from the creators, this title stems from the very idea that; in many cultures, a single, black butterfly can be considered a bad omen. Several of them can be a sign of positive change.
The description of this title combined with the performance of these five women telling and describing the passion, strife, love, endurance, and grace that so many black women fact and in having done so with such remarkable unity reminded me of A Blessing.
I walked into that theater feeling a sense of community. Those women were inspiring and the performance was remarkable.
If you get a chance, check out the Milwaukee Black Theater Festival, found here, and see these performances.
